The event has been organized in the context of the series of events: “Open Science and Citizen Science: From Principles to Practices Seminars, Workshop, Training Events (2025-2026)“.

On 18 December 2025, this intensive online training session unpacks a core pillar of Open Science: the effective and responsible management, sharing, and reuse of research data. Participants will learn to develop effective Data Management Strategies and assess the FAIRness (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) of their datasets. The training also addresses the specific ethical and legal challenges within Citizen Science. Combining theory with practice, the event aims to provide its audience with the operational tools to integrate FAIR and Open Data practices into their workflows.

Manage, Share, Transform transparency into a methodological and scientific advantage!

Core Topics Covered

  • Designing Data Management Strategies: Learn how to plan, structure, and document your research data from inception to dissemination, ensuring responsible data lifecycle management.
  • Achieving Data FAIRness: Master the FAIR principles and practical steps required to assess and enhance the quality and reusability of your datasets.
  • Navigating Legal and Ethic Complexities: Address critical issues such as data privacy, GDPR compliance, ownership, and informed consent when managing and sharing data generated by Citizen Science initiatives.
  • Workflow Integration: Acquire practical tools and best practices for embedding Open Data principles into your research workflow, maximizing transparency and reproducibility.

Speakers

  • Mareike Buss (Copenhagen Business School) Managing and Sharing Research Data in Open and Citizen Science
  • Antonio Paolo Russo (Universitat Rovira i Virgili) Dos and Don’ts from Participatory-Based Data Management: Insights from the H2020 SMARTDEST Project
  • Chair: Alessandro Manni (Università Federico II of Naples)

Mareike Buss is Information Specialist at CBS Library, where her work centers on the strategic implementation and advancement of Open Science practices within the institution. Her responsibilities include the design and execution of core institutional policy, notably concerning the drafting and implementation of the CBS Research Data Management policy (RDM). Mareike is crucial to developing and sustaining institutional RDM infrastructure, including the creation of specialized RDM services and the delivery of targeted RDM courses for the researcher community. Demonstrating her commitment to educational resources in this domain, Mareike is a contributing author in the field. She co-authored, alongside Karsten Kryger Hansen and Lea Sztuk Haahr, the guide “A FAIRy Tale: A Fake Story in a Trustworthy Guide to the FAIR Principles for Research Data”.

Antonio Paolo Russo, PhD in Regional Economics from Erasmus University Rotterdam, is a full professor in the Department of Geography at Rovira i Virgili University, Spain, and coordinator of its Doctoral Program in Tourism. His research and teaching focus on the economic, cultural, and social geography of tourist cities. He coordinated several national and European projects on cities, regions, and the role of tourism as development driver. In the H2020 SMARTDEST project (2020-2023), the main focus was on the social inequalities triggered by ‘touristification’ and the way in which local communities cope with urban change. He coordinates the “Space Place Mobility in Tourism” group of the international tourism education and research network ATLAS.
