Aspects of Digitalisation: Special Topics in Ethics and Digitalisation
Aims of the Programme
The course aims to enable students to identify and critically analyse ethical issues arising from digitalisation and Data Science. Students learn to articulate different arguments, evaluate ethical positions, and develop strategies to address these challenges. In addition, they are trained to communicate complex ethical topics clearly to both academic and non-academic audiences through presentations.
Content & Methods
The course is organised into three main parts: an introduction to ethics in science and technology, ethical issues in Data Science research, and ethical challenges in Data Science applications. Topics are explored through lectures, interactive discussions, and student presentations (referats). Active participation is an essential part of the learning process.
Key Topics
The key topics of the course include ethical issues in science and technology, as well as specific challenges in Data Science research such as open data and open access. A major focus is also placed on ethical problems in data driven applications, including bias in algorithms, search engines and recommender systems, as well as the responsible use of artificial intelligence. Overall, the course examines how digital technologies raise ethical questions and how these can be addressed.
