BEVI
Beliefs, Events, and Values Inventory
The Beliefs, Events, and Values Inventory (BEVI) is a research-based assessment tool designed to examine how individuals’ beliefs, values, and life experiences shape the way they perceive themselves, others, and the world.
BEVI is widely used in higher education to support:
- Students participating in international mobility, intercultural learning, service learning, and global citizenship programmes
- Academic and professional staff involved in curriculum development, teaching innovation, diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), and internationalisation strategies
- Institutions and alliances, such as Aurora, seeking evidence-based insights into learning outcomes related to intercultural competence, global engagement, and values development
BEVI does not measure knowledge or skills alone; it explores how individuals make meaning of experience, making it particularly relevant for transformative learning initiatives.
WHY THE BEVI TEST?
Aurora institutions use BEVI to:
- Assess the impact of international, intercultural, and experiential learning
- Support reflective learning by helping participants better understand their own values and assumptions
- Inform programme design and policy development through aggregated, evidence-based data
- Strengthen inclusion and diversity strategies by identifying patterns related to openness, empathy, identity, and worldview
- Provide undeniable evidence for the transformative effect of the education they offer on their students
The BEVI test is especially valuable because it goes beyond self-reported satisfaction or competence and provides validated, longitudinal insights into personal and educational development.
HOW DOES THE BEVI TEST WORK?
The BEVI assessment:
- Is completed online and typically takes 30–45 minutes
- Combines quantitative scales with qualitative open-ended responses
- Measures multiple dimensions, including identity, emotional attunement, worldviews, openness, and meaning-making
- Generates individual and group reports, enabling both personal reflection and institutional analysis
Results are interpreted by trained facilitators and are often used in:
- Pre- and post-programme evaluation
- Guided reflection workshops
- Research on learning outcomes and educational impact
Importantly, BEVI is a developmental and non-judgemental tool, designed to foster dialogue and growth rather than ranking or selection.
BEVI RESOURCES
Aurora provides free-of-charge access for member institutions to use the BEVI test as part of educational, research, and development activities.
Key features include:
- Multilingual availability: the BEVI has been translated into several languages to support Aurora’s multilingual and multicultural community
- Training materials and guidance for facilitators and practitioners
- Access to a global body of research publications and case studies demonstrating BEVI use in higher education contexts
These resources enable Aurora institutions to implement BEVI in a consistent, ethical, and pedagogically sound way.
