In 2025, the Aurora further strengthened its collaboration with associate partners through its programme of capacity development activities, knowledge exchange, and increased participation by associate partners in alliance-wide initiatives. These efforts reflect Aurora’s commitment to inclusive cooperation, institutional capacity building, and shared academic excellence across Europe and beyond.

Exploring Social Entrepreneurship for Sustainable Academic Development

A key highlight of the year was the workshop “Social Entrepreneurship as a Way Forward in Increasing Academic Activities through Sustainable Business Models,” held on 28 March 2025 in Bulgaria. Organised by South-West University “Neofit Rilski”, in collaboration with Palacky University Olomouc (UP), Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU) and Copenhagen Business School (CBS), the workshop brought together participants to explore how social entrepreneurship can contribute to sustainable academic development. Discussions focused on innovative business models, institutional practices, and the role of entrepreneurship in strengthening education, research, and societal impact. The event exemplified Aurora’s approach to associate partner-driven capacity building, addressing real-world challenges while fostering collaboration between associate and full partner institutions.

Strengthening Research Skills through the Aurora PhD Academy

Capacity development continued in the autumn with the Aurora Capacity Building PhD Academy on Publishing Skills and Science Communication, held at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam from 6–10 October 2025. The PhD Academy supported early-career researchers from associate partners in developing key competencies related to academic publishing, research visibility, and effective science communication. Through interactive sessions and peer exchange, participants gained practical tools to navigate the publishing landscape and communicate research outcomes to both academic and non-academic audiences. This initiative aligns with Aurora’s broader commitment to supporting junior researchers and fostering open, responsible and impactful research practices across the alliance.

Increased Integration of Associate Partners within the Aurora Alliance

In addition to targeted training activities, 2025 saw greater integration of associate partners into Aurora’s ongoing work. Associate partners were actively involved in student engagement initiatives, communication activities, and participated in the Aurora academic matchmaking event, strengthening cross-institutional networking and collaboration opportunities. These efforts contribute to building a more connected and inclusive Aurora community, ensuring that associate partners play an active role in shaping and benefiting from alliance activities.

Looking Ahead

The 2025 Capacity Development Programme highlights Aurora’s continued dedication to mutual learning, institutional development, and long-term cooperation with associate partners. The experiences and connections built throughout the year provide a strong foundation for future initiatives.
